Pine Creek High School’s theatre department staged, “Deadline,” by Don Zolidis on Nov. 6, 7, and 8 in the school auditorium. Directed by Darcey LaBandt, the production featured a student cast and crew who spent several months preparing for the performances.
Cast members said rehearsals involved structured routines and collaboration. Nadia Mullen (11), a cast member in the production, shared how the cast and crew prepare before every show. “Every night before a performance we do a company focus and warm ups,” Mullen expressed, “Which gets us into the right mindset for the show.” She added that the cast supported one another, “Everyone influences each other into being a better actor.” Mullen also described the social environment, saying, “Everyone is friends with each other. We’re one big family, playing games, talking with each other, laughing. It’s all really fun.”
Technical crews contributed to the production as well. Brendan Havens (11), head of sound, said, “As my first time being head of sound, my priority was making sure I got all of my cues down.” He added that he coordinated with other departments, explaining, “I communicated with the director on what sounds to use and as well as the lights crew to incorporate effects and audio to make the audience feel a deeper emotion.”
Another member of the cast, Kieran Schumm (12), spoke about the challenges of preparing for his role. “For one scene, my character had a head injury and I had to memorize his monologue, which took a long time,” Schumm stated. “But even though it was challenging, it turned out to be a great moment for the audience.” He said, “Seeing the audience’s reaction always motivates you and reassures you that you’re doing a good job.” Schumm ended with some words of advice, “Go for it, go all out, you gain nothing from holding back.”
