Pine Creek High School students proudly showed their community spirit during the 25th Annual Down Syndrome Walk, which took place at The Norris Penrose Event Center on Saturday, September 7. This year’s event attracted over 300 participants and raised $5,682.16, easily surpassing the goal of $5,000. The funds raised will support children with Down Syndrome and their families by providing educational materials, therapy sessions, and programs that promote inclusion and awareness. Pine Creek had the largest team, with over 130 walkers and raised the most money.
Heather Pinder, Pine Creek’s significant support needs instructor organized the Pine Creek team. Danielle Johnson, head cheerleading coach, was instrumental in publicizing the event to the entire staff at a beginning of the year meeting. Pinder is also heading up the D20 Unified sports teams.
Members of the boys soccer team and the cheerleaders attended the walk to support their teammates and raise awareness. Nick Hartman (10) joined the walk after his soccer team encouraged him. “It was great to see everyone come together for such an important cause,” he said. Hartman enjoyed various activities, such as walking, playing in a giant bouncy castle, and tasting delicious food. He addressed how important community support is for those in need, noting that the event is a great way to raise awareness and show kindness to those facing challenges.
In addition to the walk, there were booths offering information about Down syndrome and its impact on families. Parents and caregivers shared their stories, creating an atmosphere filled with understanding and kindness. Many attendees signed up for future support groups and educational sessions, showing the community’s commitment to ongoing awareness and outreach.
Shaye Peppard (10) was excited about the event. “It felt amazing to be part of something so meaningful,” he shared. He emphasized that every small effort can help support those who need assistance, reminding everyone that getting involved makes a difference.
Avery Hook, a senior cheerleader, joined the walk to support a fellow cheerleader who has Down syndrome. “Pine Creek is known for being supportive of the Down syndrome community, and we wanted to show our support,” she said. The event buzzed with fun activities, creating an exciting atmosphere for everyone involved. Hook said that being part of this supportive environment reinforced the team’s commitment to inclusion and encouragement for all students.
The Colorado Springs Down Syndrome Association’s mission is to inform and empower families while promoting community awareness of the dignity, promise, and potential of all people with Down syndrome. The CSDSA is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization serving Colorado Springs and its surrounding communities. Through their involvement in the walk, students at Pine Creek saw the support first hand.
Junior Chase Puddy said, “Being part of this walk means a lot to me. I’ve seen how much support the Down syndrome community needs, and I want to help raise awareness,” Puddy explained. He attended the walk with his friends and noticed how everyone came together to create a positive vibe. “It’s not just about walking; it’s about making connections and showing love to those who need it.”
Soccer player Landon Kancir (10) also shared his joy at being able to support the Down syndrome community with his friends. “It’s important to be here for our friends and to show we care,” he added with a smile. He mentioned that it was amazing being part of of the Pine Creek team, and to play games and support one another during the event. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and friendship, creating great memories for everyone involved.
Overall, the Down Syndrome Walk demonstrated the power of community support and the importance of coming together for meaningful causes. It provided a chance for students, families, and community members to join in a shared mission of inclusion and understanding. The Pine Creek High community’s commitment to advocating for individuals with Down syndrome continues to inspire and uplift families in need, showing that together, they can make a real difference and build a more inclusive and caring society.
