World-Class Guest Coach for Wrestling

Pine Creek Wrestling team had a world-renowned guest coach yesterday. J’den Cox, a three-time national champion, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist, 2017 World bronze medalist, and 2018, and 2019 World gold medalist visited the team to give them advice on what it takes to be the best. The story of how Cox even came to Pine Creek is sort of amazing. Senior Keigo Kawazoe said “We were shopping in Target, then saw him shopping for laundry detergent, we circled for a bit trying to figure out if that was actually J’den Cox, then my mom searched it up and saw that it was. My dad was talking to him for a bit and ended up getting his phone number, they texted and my dad asked if he could come in for Pine Creek and speak, and he said yes.”  Cox’s message was one of overcoming personal trials and inspiring athletes to dig deeper and work harder. “There are three battles to win in wrestling, on the mat, off the mat, and the most important one is the battle on the inside,” Cox said. He went on to talk about how he mastered the ability to stay healthy on the inside he became a better wrestler and person. “I don’t want you to be like me if you look up to me, honor my legacy by being better than me,” said Cox who went on to run the practice. “J’den ran the practice and the workout he had planned was really intimidating. I was sort of dogging my sprints, and he kept saying to me ‘this sprint could be the difference in you winning the state championship this year”  he kept saying that for each sprint and it really impressed on me that each movement needs to be purposeful and with your complete dedication,” said Senior Logan Noble who went on to say, “It was really crazy to be in the presence of this world-class athlete talking to you like a real person.”
